Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Queen Latifah's performance in music film and television has earned her the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. as a police officer. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah, who was born and raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah is an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". Her aunt granted it to her when she was eight. Latifah was who was 5'10" tall power forward on the high school team, was always a tall girl. She sang the song Home from the musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. The track caught the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
